The Labor Day weekend premiere in Hawaii for “You May Not Kiss the Bride,” the locally produced feature from Hawaii Film Partners, went so well that Consolidated Theaters extended the run by a week, according to producer Rann Watumull.
Although only in six theaters here, the film was the sixth highest grossing movie of the weekend, said Watumull, a co-founder with his wife, Gina, of Hawaii Film Partners.
The Hawaii run was extended to Thursday, Sept., 13, he said.
The romantic adventure comedy stars Dave Annable, Katharine McPhee, Mena Suvari, Rob Schneider, Ken Davitian and Hawaii’s Tia Carrere. Annable plays a pet photographer who is forced to marry the daughter — McPhee — of a Croatian mobster.
“Since we were only in six theaters, yet were able to come out in the top ten against big budgeted productions, it shows that audiences really enjoy the movie,” Rann Watumull said. “We are thrilled that local audiences are responding very positively to the movie.”
The film will be released nationally on Sept. 21 in Washington, D.C., Miami, Detroit, Chicago, Dallas, Phoenix, San Diego, Los Angeles and Seattle. Later this fall, the film will be screened internationally in 20 countries.
Watumull feels that the strong local showing is a good indication of the film’s potential when it hits mainland screens.
“Hopefully, it will demonstrate that there is a national audience for the movie,” he said.
