Wednesday, July 3, was the grand opening of Brug at Shirokiya. Brug is a famous Japanese bakery with six locations in Hokkaido that specializes in German- and European-style bread. This is their first location outside of Japan and they have plans to open more locations in Hawaii and throughout the U.S.
People were lined up all day long waiting to purchase Brug’s baked goods. This is what the line looked like outside around 11 a.m.
Owner and founder Takemura Katsuhide was in attendance for the grand opening. Here he is, bringing out freshly made bread from the kitchen.
Brug is known for their additive free and low-calorie bread. They use wheat flour specially grown for them in Hokkaido.
There was an area to learn about Brug and try some samples.
Honolulu City Council member Stanley Chang also made an appearance.
A favorite that I tried was the Croquette Pan. I don’t think you could ever go wrong with fried food covered in bread.
I liked it so much that I took a picture with it.

Another favorite was the Potato Pan with cheese. Double the carbs, double the deliciousness!
Brug makes 100 different types of fresh bread. This is their signature rye bread.

I love Melon Pan so much that I eat it every day when I’m in Japan. It’s the perfect combination of doughy, soft, and sweet. I’ve tried Melon Pan from other bakeries in Hawaii but they don’t compare to how it tastes in Japan. The one though is pretty authentic so I’m happy that I found a place where I can finally satisfy my Melon Pan cravings.
