GARLIC FEST: Get your breath mints ready, because today Eat the Street is presenting Garlic Fest as its theme.

More than 40 food trucks and street vendors will incorporate garlic in at least one of their dishes for the evening.

Festivities include a garlicky adobo fried rice eating contest, live music and art. New this month: three lemonade stands representing different age groups from Lemonade Alley’s keiki fundraising project.

Eat the Street takes place from 4 to 9 p.m. at 555 South St. (corner of South and Pohukaina streets) in Kakaako. Admission is free. Visit www.StreetGrindz.com or call 780-9288 for updates.

CHEESE, PLEASE: Chef Mavro is offering a plate of five unique, local cheeses from Naked Cow Dairy on the farm-to-table menu tonight as well as the opportunity to meet with cheese maker Gida Snyder. Pickles the Cow will also be available for photos in the parking lot on the way in.

The cheese plate will be included in the six-course menu and can either be a substitute for one of the courses in Chef Mavro’s three- and four- course menus or an added-on course. Wine pairings are also available.

The cheese special is available today only starting at 6 p.m. at Chef Mavro, 1969 S. King St., in Moiliili. Visit www.chefmavro.com/menus. Call 944-4714 to make reservations.

NEW MENU ITEMS AT DAVE & BUSTER’S: Dave & Buster’s is rolling out new menu items, including Pretzel Dogs, an oversized Lawnmower Salad and a South Philly Burger — a 100 percent Angus burger topped off with steak that’s been imported from the source, Philadelphia.

The entertainment center is also offering new games, by the way, and through Sunday, Dave & Buster’s is giving guests two free plays on three new games— Dirty Drivin’, Speed of Light and Quad Air Hockey — with a PowerCard purchase at Dave & Buster’s, Ward Entertainment Center, 1030 Auahi St. Info: 589-2215.

TRIBUTE TO JULIA CHILD: The Kahala Hotel & Resort will pay special tribute to Julia Child throughout the month of August.

“Bon Appetit! A Tribute to Julia Child” is a series of culinary events honoring the legendary American chef’s 100th birthday.

Besides French cooking classes and demonstrations at The Kahala’s Universite Patisserie, themed “Better with Butter,” Hoku’s will offer Julia Child’s famous recipes in a special five- and six-course dinner dubbed “Chef’s Table: A Grand Experience” on Thursdays and select Sundays.

The Veranda will also feature a Parisian Pleasures specialty menu for late-night snacking, while the Plumeria Beach House’s Bounty of the Seven Seas buffet will feature regional French cuisine on a weekly basis.

A gourmet French dinner benefiting the James Beard Foundation is scheduled for Aug. 12 in the Maile Ballroom. Cost for this dinner is $275 per person before Sunday, and $325 per person after Sunday.
