Mooncakes: It’s time to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival or Moon Festival (which falls on Sept. 19) with mooncakes.
From now until Sept. 19, Royal Garden Chinese Restaurant is offering boxes of freshly made mooncakes in boxes of four or eight.
The Cantonese-style mooncakes come in a sweet pastry shell filled with red bean or lotus paste and a center that includes a salted duck egg yolk (which represents the moon).
The pastries are usually given as gifts during the festival, customarily sliced into eight pieces and consumed with tea.
Several varieties of mooncake are available, ranging from white lotus seed paste with double egg yolk to mixed nuts mooncake and miniature white lotus seed paste with egg yolks. Prices range from $17.95 to $25.95. A gift set is available for $35.95.
Mooncakes will be available while supplies last at Royal Garden Chinese Restaurant, Ala Moana Hotel (third floor), 410 Atkinson Drive. Call 942-7788 to order in advance.
12th Avenue Grill: The new 12th Avenue Grill is getting ready to open its doors at the former Victoria Inn spot in Kaimuki on Oct. 1.
The mac and cheese and pork chop will still be on the menu, but there will also be a late-night drink special and bar menu available after 10 p.m., including a Maui Cattle Co. burger with special fixings.
In September, meanwhile, the restaurant’s new dining room will be available for private events accommodating 25 to 50 seated guests.
Chef-owner Kevin Hanney and executive chef Jason Schoonover are welcoming private groups into their kitchen for pupu or dinner. Bar Man Mike Hall, meanwhile, will offer signature cocktails in the new bar and lounge area.
The new venue will be at 1120 12th Ave. Call 732-9469 or email Tobie@12thavegrill.com for private event details.
Anniversary on the Rise: Celebrate 3660 on the Rise’s 21st anniversary with a special dinner menu of all-time favorites.
The three-course menu, which will be available starting Sunday through Sept. 29, along with the regular a la carte menu, includes a choice of clam and corn chowder or Caesar salad to start, followed by a choice of entrees that include New York steak alaea, Chinese steamed fish, catfish tempura or shichimi seared breast of chicken.
Dessert is a duet of warm chocolate souffle cake and bread pudding. Cost is $36.60 per person. Call 737-1177.
