SUNDAY, DEC. 15
Top performers stage a benefit for Philippine typhoon victims

A who’s who of local entertainers are on the bill for the “Kokua for the Philippines” telethon Sunday, Dec. 15, all of them coming together to help the victims of Typhoon Haiyan.

Henry Kapono, pictured, Amy Hanaiali’i and Kalapana are among those to perform on the Great Lawn of the Hilton Hawaiian Village. The benefit concert will be broadcast live on local radio and television (including all the major network affiliates) and streamed live at kokuaforthephillipines.com, as donations are collected by phone, online and on the scene.

Jake Shimabukuro Brother Noland and Mick Fleetwood, who’ll perform with longtime friend Kapono, were recently added to the lengthy lineup. There will also be special appearances by the cast and crew of “Hawaii Five-0.”

Proceeds will be donated to the American Red Cross for disaster relief.

One of the strongest storms in recorded history, Typhoon Haiyan slammed into the Philippines last month, causing massive damage and killing more than 5,700 people.

New Riders rev up in local show

The New Riders of the Purple Sage surprised and delighted a new round of critics and audiences in recent years, coming back in a strong way with a revamped lineup and praiseworthy 2009 album, “Where I Come From,” followed by last year’s “17 Pine Avenue.”

The band, closely associated throughout its lifespan with the Grateful Dead, continues that bond with its newest music. Frequent Dead lyricist Robert Hunter contributed to seven of the album’s 12 songs, so Deadheads and country rock fans will continue to like what the band serves up (as have fans who’ve snapped up more than 4 million records), in a line directly connected to Jerry Garcia and crew, circa “American Beauty.” New aficionados of Americana will also find enough up-to-date vigor, humor and virtuosity on display here to fire them up, with transcendent pedal steel work from founding member Buddy Cage, and warm, but poetically weary vocals and vibrant guitar from co-founder David Nelson. Fans of fingerpicking, pedal steel and storytelling songs will find plenty of appeal here.

Where: Crossroads at Hawaiian Brian’s
When: 8 p.m. today
Cost: $40, $60

The Brothers Cazimero share their love of the holidays with their popular concert “A Cazimero Christmas” this weekend at Hawaii Theatre, combining the classic sounds of Hawaiian music with those of Christmas in a colorful show that has become a holiday tradition.

In addition to the original music and Christmas favorites, part of the fun is listening to brothers Robert and Roland, with their many comedic asides. There are sure to be laughs throughout the show.

Joining the brothers are Robert Cazimero’s Halau Na Kamalei O Lililehua and the Ladies of the Royal Dance Company performing holiday hula. There will also be special hula performances by Miss and Master Keiki Hula 2013, Jeslie Ann Pavao and Luke Hunadi, both from Halau Ka Lei Mokihana O Leinaala of Kauai.

This year’s special guest star is Lehua Kalima of Na Leo Pilimehana.

When: 7:30 p.m. today and Saturday, 2 p.m. Sunday

DJ Sasha stays trendy

As an innovator who got his start on the international dance music scene in the late ’80s, DJ Sasha is anything but passe.

The innovative and artistic Welsh DJ and record producer still packs the clubs, and he brings his brand of house music to The Underground in Fort Street Mall on Saturday.

Although he started his career playing acid house, Sasha has evolved with the ever-changing trends of electronic dance music — his 1999 trance hit “Xpander” was a favorite among clubbers. He’s remixed the likes of Madonna (“Ray of Light”) and The Chemical Brothers (“Out of Control”) and continues to push boundaries.

In March, he released “Involv3r,” a two-disc album described as moving “from shimmering Balearic ambience to deep house and atmospheric techno.”

Where: The Underground, 1146 Fort Street Mall
When: 9 p.m. Saturday
Cost: $30
