Some of the best sausage in Hawaii is served daily at Hank’s Haute Dogs in Kakaako. We all have Henry “Hank” Adaniya to thank for that, as it was his idea to leave a high-profile culinary career in Chicago and head to Oahu in 2006.

Hank’s built an impressive fan following in just a few years, thanks to multiple appearances on cable network food shows and the explosion of social media along with Adaniya’s innate ability to create food people want to eat. His Coral Street restaurant drew crowds to Kakaako long before the neighborhood’s redevelopment made it a trendy spot for tourists and locals alike.

So it’s no surprise when popular food, travel and lifestyle website Gayot.com picked its list of top 10 hot dog stands in America, Hank’s would be on the list alongside national heavyweights like Ben’s Chili Bowl in Washington, D.C. (which opened in 1958!), Lafayette Coney Island in Detroit (open since 1918 and the birthplace of the Coney dog) and Hot Doug’s in Chicago (where Adaniya has done plenty of “research” over the years; it will close for good in October).

“Cast all cares about calories aside,” the website writes about the lobster dog and bacon-wrapped Fat Boy at Hank’s, two of the most popular items on the menu.
