Honolulu is officially a two TV series town again as the ABC series “Last Resort” today began shooting episodes for its freshman season. The start of work comes three weeks after CBS began shooting season three of “Hawaii Five-0.”

The drama about the crew of a U.S. submarine who become hunted fugitives plans to start with a bang. The producers of “Last Resort” told area residents near Kualoa Ranch that they plan to film “a dramatic battle scene” and to expect gunfire and mortar explosions Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

“Last Resort” is being produced for ABC by Sony Pictures Television and stars Emmy Award winner Andre Braugher (“Men of a Certain Age,” “Homicide: Life on the Streets) as the captain of the ballistic missile submarine USS Colorado. Braugher leads a large ensemble cast that includes Scott Speedman, Daisy Betts, Dichen Lachman, Daniel Lissing, Sahr Ngaujah, Camille de Pazzis, Jessy Schram, Robert Patrick and Autumn Reeser, who also has a recurring role on “Five-0.”

The series was created written by Shawn Ryan (“The Shield,” “Terriers) and Karl Gajdusek, who also will serve as executive producers along with Marney Hochman (“The Chicago Code,” “Terriers”).

ABC plans to air the series on Thursdays beginning Sept. 17. In Hawaii, it is expected to air at 7 p.m. on KITV.

This is the third series ABC has had shot in Hawaii after the six-year run of “Lost” ended in 2010. It followed “Lost” with “Off the Map,” which aired in 2011, and “The River,” which aired earlier this year. Both were canceled but critics have said “Last Resort” is one of the most anticipated new shows of the coming season.

Sony shot the “Last Resort” pilot this past spring.
