Food Network Magazine has showcased Kaka’ako Kitchen’s fresh ahi sandwich in its “50 States, 50 Sandwiches” feature, calling it a “must-try” in Hawaii.
“This is not your usual tuna sandwich: It’s a juicy ahi steak with teriyaki sauce on a purple taro bun,” editors write. Multiple sandwiches from all 50 states were sampled to come up with top picks, which currently appear online and will be published in the magazine’s upcoming September print issue.
Russell Siu’s gourmet plate lunch eatery at Ward Centre is described as “Euro-Island Style,” combining Asian ingredients with European culinary influences.
Other winning sandwiches include a reindeer sausage sandwich from Cafe 817 in Anchorage, Alaska; a molasses-rubbed pork belly sandwich from Bunk Sandwiches in Portland, Ore.; “Oyster Loaf” from Casamento’s Restaurant in New Orleans, La.; and “Chicken Parm” from Parm in New York City.
Food Network Magazine spent six months sampling sandwiches around the country for its annual survey of best dishes. In past years, the survey focused on burgers and pizza.
