Halau Na Kamalei seeks to raise funds for Merrie Monarch trip
Kumu hula and singer-songwriter Robert Cazimero brings Halau Na Kamalei o Lililehua to Whole Foods Market Kahala on Wednesday to raise funds for a trip to Hilo for this year’s 50th annual Merrie Monarch Festival. On Wednesday, 5 percent of all sales benefit the halau’s nonprofit Wahea Foundation.
Cazimero and 50 of his dancers, past and present, give a special exhibition performance at this year’s hoike at the Edith Kanakaole Stadium in Hilo. Among the alumni of Na Kamalei are well-known kumu hula including Manu Boyd, Patrick Makuakane, Karl Veto Baker, Michael Casupang and Moses Crabbe.
Halau Na Kamalei, the first male halau to place at Merrie Monarch back in 1976, took the overall winner title (and swept all the kane categories) in 2005, the last year the halau competed.
The all-day fundraiser includes live entertainment, hula and cultural presentations on pahu drum making and paiai pounding. Also expect to see a hula “flash mob” with spontaneous dancing in the aisles. 7 a.m.-10 p.m. Wednesday at Whole Foods, Kahala Mall; waheafoundation.org.
